Wakeland HS Jazz Audition Information

Information:
We are hoping to offer TWO full jazz ensembles this year!! Membership in the Wakeland HS Jazz Ensemble or Jazz Lab Band is open to all students who are currently enrolled in a Band class (guitar and bass players may be exempt from this requirement), however instrumentation may be limited to “traditional” jazz wind instruments (trumpet, sax, trombone) for Jazz Ensemble.  Students who play a non-traditional jazz instrument may want to consider a secondary instrument for jazz ensemble, but are more than welcome and encouraged to participate in Jazz Lab.

Rehearsal Schedule:
Both groups will meet outside of the school day.  A complete rehearsal and performance schedule will be developed along with selected members to minimize conflicts, but may involve either before school or evening rehearsals (or a combination of the two).

Instructions:

All Wind and Vibraphone Players
  • Play along with one of the accompaniment tracks for “Blues For Alice” found below  - choose whichever practice tempo that you can perform the best throughout the entire piece.
  • Play through the Melody once with the recording. Do your best to improv solo the 2nd time based on F-Blues and the chord changes, then Play the Melody again on the 3rd time through.
  • The piece should be mostly legato, except for notes followed by rests which will be played short.  All other notes should be smooth, connected, and performed with a swing style.
  • Take advantage of the resources and references on the website - Listen to these recordings!!
Piano & Guitar Players:
  • Play along with one of the accompaniment tracks for “Blues For Alice” found below - choose whichever practice that you can perform the best throughout the entire piece.
  • Play the Melody the first time though. Do your best to improv solo the 2nd time based on F-Blues and the chord changes, then Play the Melody again on the 3rd time through.
  • Piano players should try to “comp” in their left hand during the melody. Use the references and chord voicings available to help you develop your comping.
  • Guitar players - play the melody 1st time, then try to “comp” only during the 3rd time trough the melody. Use the references and chord voicings available to help you develop your comping.
Bass Players:
  • Play along with the Bass accompaniment track for “Blues For Alice” found below. This has the drums and piano, with the Bass part removed. Play the written bass line the first time, and try to create your own bass line based on the chord changes given for the 2nd time.
  • Play along with the Bass accompaniment track for “Trofeo de Bolos” found below. This has the drums and piano, with the Bass part removed.  Play through the pattern 2 times with the recording.
Drums:
  • Play along with the Drum accompaniment track for “Blues For Alice” found below - Read off of the "lead sheet" guitar/vibes part. This has the bass and piano, with the Drum part removed. Play and appropriate medium swing style.
  • Play 32-bars of a Latin style of your choice - either a Bossa or Samba
  • Play 32-bars of a Funk style
